CHESAPEAKE -- A. Calvin Avant, 65, of Western Branch, died Oct. 15, 1999, at his residence. Born in Timmonsville, S.C., he was a professional engineer and a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. He was a member of several professional organizations: National Society of Professional Engineers; Virginia Society of Professional Engineers; Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, (IEEE, senior member); American Institute of Plant Engineers; Illuminating Engineering Society, (past regional vice president); Society of American Military Engineers; National Association of Fire Investigations; and National Academy of Forensic Engineers (NAFE Fellow).

Survivors include his wife, Joan W. Avant; two daughters, Valerie Lynn Dobson of Chesapeake and Vicki A. Newman and her husband, Stephen, of Chesapeake; a son, Craig W. Avant of Virginia Beach; his mother, Ada Avant Roberts of Newport News; five sisters, Frances Andrews of Yorktown, Helen Neal of Newport News, Kathie Taylor of Atlanta, Beverly Russell and Lynda Lasswel of Jupiter, Fla.; a brother, Bob Avant of Newport News; and five grandchildren, Jason, Andrew, Joshua, Brittany and Brian.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Centenary United Methodist Church by the Rev. William L. Vann. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel. He will be dearly missed by his devoted wife of 41 years, his children and a host of nieces, family and friends.
