(A small portion of his obituary.) Pioneer James Yates came to California by way of the Isthmus in 1849 in the company of his (life-long friend) Will S Green, and Col C D Semple(who laid out the town of Colusa) and John W Semple son of Dr Robert Semple. He left his home in Seventy-six,Clinton Co. Kentucky Aug 3, 1849. They arrived in San Francisco on October 10,1849. He came to Colusa(after Green)to live in 1850 where he spent the rest of his life. He married Miss Addie Connor on June 16, 1865 daughter of William D Connor.

Mr Yates was Captain on the "Colusa" when she made her first trip, and W S Green was one of the pilots. Mr Yates bought the ferry boat the "Lucy Long"on which he was Captain also the "Martha Jane". Yates and Green were proprietors of the first hotel in Colusa till late in the fall of 1854. Mr Yates also served as deputy sheriff for eight years. Later he was a prominent farmer for many years, and lived four miles from town. His sons are Arthur Yates of Alturas,Luke Yates of Washington,Burke Yates of Nevada, and Frank Yates of Colusa. His only daughter Mrs Victor Acosta(Ida Mae Yates) of Los Angeles.

A life landmark of Colusa has been taken away, and a community bows its head in grief. Mrs Van Winkles who was Mrs Robert Semple, when the party reached California in the fall of 1849, and at whose home in Benecia the young men stayed until they obtained employment, now lives in Colusa with her daughter Mrs Mary Turman, and is one of the few pioneer women of that day living, perhaps the only one in this valley. Hers was the first home that James Yates entered in California, and their friendshp continued to the last....
