Businessman. Along with his younger brother, Hal Steinbrenner who was principal owner and managing partner, he was part-owner and co-chairman of the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball. Starting in 2007, their father gave most of the control of the Yankees to him and his brother due to failing health and the two of them made most of the decisions about the Yankees with team President Randy Levine and General Manager Brian Cashman. Just like his father, he obtained a reputation for being outspoken and was often criticized by many sports columnists for his remarks. Even though he was very opinionated, he was not seen around the team very often. He worked mostly from the Yankees offices in Tampa, Florida. He also had a passion for breeding, raising and racing horses at the family farm in Florida, and was a longtime member of the board of the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company. Later in life, he became involved in auto racing with his son, George Michael Steinbrenner IV. Harding Steinbrenner Racing competed on the IndyCar circuit in 2019 with his 22-year old son becoming the youngest team owner in IndyCar history.
