On Dec. 5, 1953, Shirley married Eddie G. Gibbs of Brooks and moved to Brooks to begin their family. She was a homemaker until the last of her four children went to school and then she went to Belfast to begin work in manufacturing. Shirley first worked at Waldo Shoe Corp., later at Stinson's Canning Factory and lastly at Harborside Graphics.
Shirley loved music and upon retiring, she and her sister would go to area nursing homes, boarding homes and Granges to entertain folks with singing. Shirley also loved to crochet and do embroidery, giving away many items that she made.
For many years, Shirley attended the Brooks Pentecostal Church in Brooks and Faith Temple Church of God in Belfast. Shirley loved serving God with her church families. While at Tall Pines, when she was unable to attend church, Shirley enjoyed watching Souls Harbor on Sunday mornings.
Shirley was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Eddie, and her precious Chihuahua, Teddy Boy. Shirley is survived by her four children: Linda Gagner of Georgia, Ernest Gibbs of Brooks, Carol Braley and husband Harold of Albion, and Sheryl Perkins of Belfast; four grandchildren, Brock Gagner of Georgia, Bronson Gagner of Florida, Patrick Albert of Swanville and Derrick Roberts of Belfast; three great-grandchildren, Dawson and Denali Roberts of Belfast, and Briella Gagner of Florida; a brother, Maurice Moody, and wife Linda, of Brooks; and a sister: Lorraine Gibbs, of Belfast; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Gibbs of Belfast, and Marion Veino of Newburgh; a special aunt, Doris Scammon of Connecticut; nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends too many to mention.
Shirley was a caring person and always had a big smile for everyone she met.
Her son said, “She was greatly loved and will be sadly missed.”
Shirley will be buried in the Kinney Cemetery in Brooks at a later date. Arrangements are with Riposta Funeral Home, Belfast. After this pandemic is over, a celebration of Shirley’s life will be held where everyone can gather and remember this wonderful lady. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at ripostafh.com.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. (Republican Journal 4/13/2020)
