Veteran Geo. W. Guthrie

Special to The News.

Lexington, Tex., April 15,--On April 10 at 6' o'clock George W. Guthrie peacefully passed to a home on high, trusting fully in the blessed Savior, and requesting his children to "weep not". He leaves behind an aged one who shared his sorrows and pain. He had suffered much, having been an invalid for three years. He was born in Tennessee on July 2, 1824; moved to Texas with his parents in 1827; in 1850 he married Miss Perinelia Fokes. Together they struggled when this state was in its infancy. Where towns and farms are now and then a wild frontier; where the coyotes howled and the red man roamed was their home for many years. He was with Houston when Santa Anna was captured; rode the boarders to keep back invaders in the forties. He joined the Masonic Lodge in 1861 and the Royal Arch degree was conferred on him in 1867. He was the father of seven children of whom six survive him. He departed this life on the 34th birthday of his baby child.
