John Charles Bertlshofer

John Charles Bertlshofer, 80, passed away on Friday, April 3, 2020 at Wayne UNC Health Care.

John was born in Lexington, Kentucky on July 22, 1939 to the late John Paul Bertlshofer and Charlotte Squire Bertlshofer. Before his retirement, John served as the store manager of J.C. Penney in Goldsboro but had served the company in management for over 35 years. He was a farmer at heart, and many of his happiest times were when he was tinkering on one of his prized tractors. John was a member of the International Harvester Collectors Chapter 37 Eastern North Carolina Club as well as the Eastern Carolina Vintage Farm Equipment Club.

John lived a life of dedication to his family and friends, and to his community. He served his community many ways as member of Pine Forest United Methodist Church and as a past member of the Rotary Club of Goldsboro.

A private graveside service for the family will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2020 at Wayne Memorial Park with Rev. Madison Hankal officiating.

John is survived by his wife of 27 years, Mary Davis Lane Bertlshofer; children, Mary Elizabeth Bertlshofer and John Allen Bertlshofer (Jennifer) all of Arizona; step-daughter, Phyllis Lane of Goldsboro; grandchildren, Amber Lynn, Taylin, and Hagan; step-grandchildren, Jessica and Mary Jane; and sister, Elizabeth B. Swanson and husband Allen of Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in John’s memory to Pine Forest United Methodist Church, 867 Hwy. 581 South, Goldsboro, NC 27530.
