"Catherine Mary Bureke, 88, died at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007, at the Willow Rose Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Jerseyville.
She was born June 10, 1919, in St. Louis to Gerhard and Catherine (Schwerdt) Honkomp. She was raised in St. Louis and lived with her husband, Ernest Francis Buerke, in St. Charles, Missouri, before they decided to move to California in 1952. While there, they owned and operated several bakeries, doughnut shops and coffee shops. They shared 41 years together before his death in 1977. She continued to live in Alber Hill, California, until 1995, when she moved to be closer to her son in Fieldon. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Carol and George James of Anaheim, California, three sons and daughters-in-law, James Albert and Mary Buerke of Morongo Valley, California, Stephen and Debra Buerke of Fieldon and Stanley and Deanna Buerke of Fredericksburg, Virginia; 26 grandchildren; many great and great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Anna Ruth Clar and Mary Ellen Bowers, both of Overland, Missouri, and Caroline Manis of St. Louis. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Mary Katherine Noreen; two sons, Ernest Francis Buerke Jr. and Kenneth Buerke; two grandsons, Ralph William Buerke and William Glen Buerke; two brothers Gerhard and Joseph Honkomp; and two sisters, Eleanor Temm and Dolores Duncan. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. She will buried with her husband in California at a later date. Memorials may be given to the activity department at the Willow Rose Nursing and Rehabilitation Center."
