Wilfrid William Ashley, 1st Baron Mount Temple, was the son of The Right Hon. Evelyn Ashley and his wife, Sybella Charlotte Farquhar, daughter of Sir Walter Farquhar, 3rd Baronet. His paternal grandfather was the social reformer Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury. William Cowper-Temple, 1st Baron Mount Temple, was his great-uncle. He served as Minister of Transport between 1924 and 1929 under Stanley Baldwin. When he left the House of Commons in 1932, he was raised to the peerage as Baron Mount Temple, of Lee in the County of Southampton, a revival of the title held by his great-uncle.

Lord Mount Temple was married in 1901 to Amalia Mary Maud Cassel, daughter and only child of financier Sir Ernest Cassel. Following his wife's early death in 1911, he was married in 1914 to Muriel Emily ("Molly") Forbes-Sempill, the former wife of Rear-Admiral Arthur Forbes-Sempill and the daughter of The Rev. Walter Spencer of Fownhope Court, Herefordshire.

The Hampshire Advertiser & Southampton Times, 8th July 1939, reports Lord Mount Temple was buried privately at Romsey Cemetery (i.e. Botley Road Cemetery). He is not buried at Romsey Abbey and there is no record of his burial there. On the ground research at Romsey Abbey conducted by Find A Grave contributor Hamish, Lord Glencairn (ID # 51271116).
