John was born in Palestine, TX to William Roland and Sylva Marie Ladd Campbell. His parents are buried in Campbell Cemetery. John served in the Army during WW II, enlisting in 1940 and training at Ft. Bragg, N.C. He served in England, Belgium and France. He received the Purple Heart for his injury on Valla Valla in the Fiji Islands during WW II. He also received European Theater and Pacific Theater Ribbons and 20 Battle Stars. He was survived by his wife, Hazel Stanphil Campbell.

OBITUARY: Dallas (TX) Morning News, Friday, 7 January 1955:

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Hassell & Foster Funeral Chapel in Palestine, Anderson County, for John D. Campbell, 34, a telegraph operator for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad and former resident of Dallas.

He was killed Tuesday morning at the Encinal, La Salle County depot, when the gun he was cleaning discharged. Campbell had been living in Encinal about five months. Burial will be in the Elkhart, Anderson County, Cemetery.

Campbell was born in Palestine and attended schools there. A veteran of World War II, Campbell served with the United States Army in both in the Pacific and European theaters of war. He was wounded while on duty in the Fiji Islands and was later given the Purple Heart. He was also awarded a Presidential Citation.

He moved to Dallas in 1945 following his discharge from the service. He lived here until 1949. Survivors included his wife and daughter, Miss Jolene Marie Campbell, both of Encinal; his parents, Mr. and Mrs Roland Campbell of Dallas; two brothers, Robert Allen Campbell of Dallas and C. J. Campbell of Lancaster, and two sisters, Mrs. L. A. Biles and Mrs. David Butner, both of Dallas.
