India G Butler was the daughter of William H Butler (1834-aft 1900) and India Lucetta Smith (1838-aft 1880). Her mother was from Virginia, and her father from Alabama and they married in Arkansas County, Arkansas, where both their families had migrated.

India's middle initial G may stand for Gertrude. This is reported on the FamilySearch unified genealogy, but no documentation is provided.

She married John Azari LaCotts (1868-1942) and they had two children, but they divorced in 1903, as reported by a couple of undocumented trees with considerable details that indicate they are reporting family information. On 27 January 1904, India married widower William James Porter (also found in records and on his gravestone as James W Porter) in Arkansas County. After bearing two more children, India died in March 1915.

She is buried in Mt Pleasant Cemetery as is her husband Will Porter.
