MADISON - Lorraine Kretlow "Honey" Schwenn, age 92, passed away on Friday, March 12, 2004. She was born on June 7, 1911, the daughter of Louis and Clara Kretlow. She was a lifelong resident of Madison, and a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church since 1961. She graduated from Madison East High School in 1928, and continued to display her "old Eastside pep" by serving as a historian, recounting the early years at East High School for several classes. She served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Quantico, Va., and San Diego, Calif, from 1944 until 1945, and the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves from 1946 until 1947. She remained a member of the Women's Marine Corps Association and the American. Legion Post 360 Auxiliary. She was previously employed "by the General Casualty Company, JC Penney, and the Attic Angel Nursing Home. She remained employed in various positions including private nursing care until she retired in 1995, at age 84. Lorraine married Howard Schwenn in Madison, on July 24, 1948. Together, they shared their love of fishing, camping, and the outdoors with their four children. Lorraine was an enthusiastic sports participant and fan. In her younger years, she enjoyed hunting with her younger brother and Tier friends. Lorraine broke the city of Madison 50-yard dash record in' 1929, played catcher on the U.S. Marine Corps Softball Team in 1944, and was the city of Madison bowling champion in singles, doubles, all events and high single game in 1946. She rode her Dike well into her seventies. Lorraine was also an avid UW Women's Basketball fan, keeping detailed statistics and helping coach the team from her living room. Lorraine was devoted to her family and friends and was loved by all who knew her. Survivors include her children, Steve (Christie) of Savannah, Mo., Sandy (Dennis) Reno of Madison, Jackie (Dick) Wasserburger of Madison, and Patti (Marc) Fannon of San Diego; her grandchildren, Janna (Barney) Hill, Hayley Schwenn, Jenny (Jason) Pearson, Katie Schwenn, Logan Strander, Alise and Ian Wasserburger and McKenzie Fannon; great-granddaughters, Calli and Dylan; her sisters, Betty (Don) Quinn of Neenah, and Dorothy (Bill) McDonald of Menomonee Falls; her brother, Donald (Ginny) Kretlow of Milwaukee; her nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, in 1971; and brothers, Col. Sidney Kretlow and Col. Stanley Kretlow. Funeral services will be held at GOOD SHEPHERD LUTHERAN CHURCH, 5701 Raymond Road, Madison, on Tuesday, March 16, 2004, at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in First Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, March 1 5, 2004, at GUNDERSON WEST FUNERAL HOME, 7435 University Ave., Middleton. Memorials may be made to Madison East High School Girls Athletics. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Meadowmere Assisted Living Apartments for helping to make these past months so enjoyable for her and to St. Marys Health Care Center for their kindness and compassion.
