Allerton was the son of Allerton and Alathea Cushman of Massachusetts.
He married Harmony Allen, daughter of Rev. Timothy Allen of Coventry, CT , on 2 June 1761.
Allerton and Harmony lived in Coventry and had 8 children.

In 1792 his son Minerva moved his family to the wilds of Otsego County NY where he built a home and a store/tavern in Schuyler Lake in the Township of Exeter.

In 1795 Allerton, his wife Harmony and their children Joseph and Mary joined Minerva and his family in the wild "bush" of Otsego County. He arrived with a load of supplies for building his homestead and merchandise for the Cushman store. He and his sons made many trips back to "civilization" to procure merchandise for the store in Schuyler Lake.

He died in 1801 in his early sixties.
Cushman family lore says he was buried on the banks of Schuyler Lake(now Canandarago Lake) but there is no other source that verifies this claim.
He appeared on a list of Revolutionary War Veterans buried in this cemetery in the early 1800s.
