Gertrude H. “Trudy” Johnson, 93, of Galesburg, died at 7:31 p.m. Thursday, April 2, 2020, in Seminary Manor.

She was born March 10, 1927, in Neponset, Illinois, the daughter of Bruno and Margaret (Arlt) Block. She married Stuart Carter on December 27, 1946, in Kewanee, Illinois. She later married Donald E. Johnson on March 2, 1974, in Galesburg. He preceded her in death on December 11, 2007 after 33 years of marriage.

She is survived by her daughter, Janet (Tim) Elliott of Leland, North Carolina; a step-son, Thomas E. (Dee Ann) Johnson of Omaha, Nebraska; six grandchildren, Lauren Carter, Justin Carter, Aaron (Kim) Johnson, Seth Johnson, Adam (Andrea) Johnson, and Jewell Stanford; 12 great grandchildren; a brother, Hugo (Mary Ann) Block of Neponset; and a sister, Ruth (Sam) Deahl of San Antonio, Texas. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Robert Carter; and her step-daughter, Linda Broman.

Trudy was raised and educated in Neponset, graduating from high school there in 1944. She moved to Galesburg in 1945 and attended Brown’s Business College. She held a series of administrative positions including, Sear’s, Midwest Manufacturing, Doctors Bick and Erffmeyer, and the Galesburg Sanitation District.

Trudy was an active member of First Christian Church. She was also a volunteer at Galesburg Cottage Hospital for many years and served as past president with the Cottage Hospital Service Guild. She donated her time to FISH Food Pantry and the Knox County Humane Society as well. Trudy was a member of PEO Chapter NK and has served as a past president.

Cremation will be accorded. Due to social distancing limitations related to the COVID-19 pandemic, memorial services will be announced for a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Knox County Humane Society, 1855 Windish Drive, Galesburg, IL 61401 (309-342-1275).
