Ambrose Carlton was born in N.C. and was the son of John Carlton 1724-1787 and Elizabeth Wallace 1731-1800 and grandson of John Carlton. He married Jean Montgomery. He served in the American Revolution, seeing service in VA and Georgia and had the distinction of being under the command of General Washington and held the rank of sergeant.Ambrose Carlton was a Soldier at Medway Church and a Sargent in the Georgia Legion at the Battle of Ogeechee Road. He came to Bedford, Indiana, after the close of the war, and was one of the founders of the city.

Sacred to the Memory of Ambrose Carlton
Born in the South of England in 1763 - Emigrated to Virginia in 1779. At the commencement of the war of the Rebellion against Great Britein he emigrated to North Carolina and enlisted in the celebrated Georgia Legion and served until independence was achieved. He emigrated to Indiana Territory in 1815 and settled on White River in 1816 and was one of the county commissioners that organized Lawrence County. He was for many years a minister of the gospel.
