Joseph Lieber, foreman of the Davenport boiler shops of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railway, is one of the self-made men, who has risen from the level of an apprentice boy to the foremanship of one of the principal departments of this system. He has always lived in his native city, Davenport, and he is a son of Joseph Lieber, Sr. At the age of fifteen years he commenced work in a trunk factory. A year later he entered upon his present line of work, and in 1881 he commenced his apprenticeship under William Montgomery. He continued under him until 1896, when he was appointed foreman of the shops at Davenport to succeed Mr. C. Shillinger. The boiler shops consist of four stalls, in which are forges, cutting machines, pounding machines and rollers, and nine men are constantly employed. Mr. Lieber has designed and made many of his most useful tools, especially bolt nippers, which constitute a fine piece of machinery, used in cutting 1 1/8-inch bolts by hydraulic pressure. Mr. Lieber has proved himself a master of his trade and is equal to any task that comes under his class of work.

The subject of this sketch was united in marriage with Cecelia Schnoor, of Davenport, and they have a family of four sons, namely: Ralph, Elmer, Walter and Richard.
