Jack LeRoy Martin

Jack passed away while he slept in the early morning of Tuesday, March 31, 2020. He was 88 years old. He was born in Lansing, Michigan on April 30, 1931 to an English father, the late Thomas Martin and a Scottish mother Jessie (Aird) Martin. After graduation from Holt High in 1949, he married Phyllis Ann French on October 21, 1950. They had 5 children and were married 65 years, until her death in 2015. His secret formula was to always let her have her way. He served in the Naval Reserve and was employed by and retired from the US Postal Service as a City Letter Carrier. Dad was a proud member of NALC Branch 122 and for many years delivered mail to businesses on West Saginaw and surrounding neighborhoods from the Delta Township Branch on West Michigan Ave in Lansing.
Dad really did not like Michigan winters and as soon as he retired the happy couple wintered in Florida and later Myrtle Beach for years. He was always packed and ready to go as soon as the family Christmas celebration ended. He loved baseball, basketball and especially golf. When he was a boy, after bedtime he used to hide his transistor radio under his pillow and listen to Detroit Tigers night games. He religiously followed Spartan basketball, the Tigers and was a big fan of that other golfer named Jack. He loved playing golf in the Post Office league with his long-time partner Bruce Brooks and the other guys and his sons any time but especially on Father's Day. Dad had many good friends, especially coworkers such as Ed Wilson and many others including all the guys from the Post Office golf league, who did not forget him after he moved to a nursing home. Those visits, cards and camaraderie meant the world to him, brightening his day and lifting his spirits during his final years. Jack was very close to his older brother, Uncle Jerry Martin and a large group of in-laws, the Frenchs, Cooks, and the Gambles and nephew Steve Martin, who visited Dad at the nursing home on a regular basis.
You could not ask for a better husband and father. Dad was up early and worked late most of his life to ensure the well-being of his family. Thanks for the memories Pops.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Phyl, her parents Everett and Bernice (Burris) French, sister in-law Ruth (Jerry) Martin, in-laws Jim and Betty Lou Cook, Ron and Betty French, Al and Gerrie French and Dave and Janet Gamble. Surviving are his daughter Amanda, sons Terry (Gail), Dirk, Jon (Judy) and Todd (Diana), his brother Jerry and many grand and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family is being served by the Skinner Funeral Home and burial will take place on Friday, April 3, 2020 at East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Okemos. Due to the coronavirus pandemic there will be no funeral service. Thank you everyone for everything.
