John Elmer Burris, 92, of Parsons died at 5:54 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, 2000, at the Labette County Medical Center, where he had been a patient for three weeks.

He was born May 31, 1908, at Fordland, Mo., one of 11 children of George W. and Martha Jane (Green) Burris. He moved to the McCune area with his family in 1913 and grew up there.
He lived all his adult life in the Parsons area, except for five years he lived in Chandler, Okla., during his second marriage.

He was a member of the Parsons Police Department five years and served as Labette County sheriff from 1949 to 1954. He was the oldest living former sheriff in Kansas. For 15 years, until his retirement, he was an industrial safety inspector for the state of Kansas and worked throughout Southeast Kansas.

He married Eva A. Lumm on June 11, 1927, at Independence. She preceded him in death, after 64 years of marriage, on Nov. 2, 1991.
He married Mary Clover of Chandler, Okla., on Sept. 6, 1992, in Parsons. She preceded him in death on May 7, 1997.

He was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church of Parsons; the Oswego Masonic Lodge; the Royal Arch Masons; the Knights Templar, of which he was past commander; the Mirza Temple of Pittsburg; the White Shrine of Jerusalem at Coffeyville; and the Order of Amaranth No. 7 at Pittsburg. In 1972 he was grand royal patron of the Order of Amaranth. He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Chandler, Okla.

Survivors are two sons, Elmer J. Burris of Topeka and David Leon Burris of Tulsa; a daughter, Rosetta Furnas of Hot Springs, Ark.; 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Eva Belle Culbertson in
1993 and Patsy May Shears in 1995; seven brothers; and three sisters.
The service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Faith United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kathleen Ketchell Ferris officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Parsons with Masonic rites.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons.
Memorials may be made to the Faith United Methodist Church.
