Hazel Keller Zimet, a resident of Ft Myers, FL passed away on July 12, 2007 after a long illness. Hazel was born in Dravosburg, PA on May 3, 1925. She was the only daughter and oldest child of Charles D. and Hazel(Keller)Caulkins. She is predeceased by her younger brother Charles. Hazel met her future husband Irvin Zimet in the famous Summer of 42 and both were early high school graduates at age 17. Hazel went on to earn a B.S. degree at Miami University of Ohio and Irv enlisted in the US Army and served as a paratrooper in the European Theatre during World War II achieving the rank of Sergeant. They were a great team and Hazel and Irv celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in December 2006. They have two children, son Mike(Mari) lives in Stony Point, NY, and daughter Martha of Bonnie Doon, CA. Hazel and Irv have two grandchildren, Tara Keller Zimet who passed away in September of 2006 and Ensign Michael Zimet, USN who is serving aboard the USS Enterprise deployed in support of Iraqi Freedom. After her birth, Hazel's family moved from PA to Cleveland, OH where her father taught in the Cleveland schools system for twenty-five years. After her marriage to Irv in December of 1946, Hazel worked for Ohio Bell (AT&T) and Irv went on to college at Case Western Reserve University on the GI Bill. The team functioned well as Mike was born in Berea, OH in 1951 and after moving to Toledo, Martha was born in late 1952. Hazel relished her role as a "stay at home Mom" and was the backbone of the family as Irv used his summers to attend graduate school and whose career in business took him away from home 70% of the time in their early years. Hazel loved to travel and Irv's work required extensive travel throughout the US/Canada/Mexico as well as travel to Europe and the Far East. In the early 70's, Hazel made 13 trips in 18 months to Europe and the Far East to spend a few weeks at a time with Irv. Hazel's work as both mother and surrogate father paid off as the children went on to college, Mike graduated from the US Naval Academy at Annapolis and Martha earned a scholarship to Alfred University in Alfred NY followed by graduate school in Italy and Berkeley, CA where she earned a Master of Fine Arts Degree. In the fifteen years that the family lived on Long Island, Hazel became a certified as a brailist by the US Library of Congress. During her many years as a volunteer, she transcribed over 10,000 pages of technical high school courses and SAT examinations. The same attention to detail and great patience brought her many years of happiness completing hundreds of cross-stitch scenes that adorn every room of her house. Hazel was proud of her membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution as she was a direct descendent of Andrew Proudfit of Edinboro, Scotland who settled in America in 1754. Hazel was very close to her maternal grandmother Inez Proudfit Caulkins and spent many happy summers with her grandmother near Edinboro, PA.
