Joan Metters Hines, 88, resident of High Point, went to be with her Savior and Lord on March 26, 2020. Obituaries are to tell of accomplishments according to this world’s standards but this one cannot do that because her accomplishments are far greater. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, and a friend to all she met. She would proudly tell you of the time she worked at Doc Hoffman’s Drug Store, or as a nursing aid at High Point Hospital, but her highest honor was when she opened her home as a day care for children while the parents worked. God gave her the most generous, kind spirit that she used every day of her life. She fed and clothed more than one can count. She cared for and helped raise and influence the minds and lives of so many children she kept throughout the years. She would bake her delicious pies and world famous persimmon pudding (that so many loved) for others even when she was hurting because she wanted to keep giving. She always had a welcome smile and a warmth that could not be matched. Her love of God was enormous and her faith was enduring. Even up until her last days, she had her church song book by her bedside. She spoke about the first bible she was ever given and told the story of when she was saved, talking about how she wanted others to be saved and speaking the praises and promises of God. Her accomplishments go far beyond the measure of man and her rewards in heaven will be many.
She is now reunited with her husband, William Hines, and will finally be able to put her arms around her babies Ronald Carl and Kathy Ann. Her family reunion will include her mother, Ina Mae; her father, Robert Clarence Metters; as well as her brothers, Charles, Robert (Bobby), William (Bill), Gilbert Dale, Gary, and her baby sister, Sylvia Leigh. Many of us are left to mourn our loss but celebrate her homecoming. She is survived by her sisters, Betty Jean and Edith Marie; her brother, James Arnold; her son, Dennis and wife Sharon; her daughter, Mary Ann and husband Bryant; three grandchildren, Danielle, William and wife Shawney, and Brittany; and five great grandchildren. She has so many extended family members that have been so kind and loving to her. Among the list of family left to honor her memory is Shirley Metters, her beloved sister-in-law that has been as close as any sister could have been to her. She leaves behind innumerable sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews of whom she loved dearly….along with her church family, longtime neighbors and friends.
In light of the coronavirus bringing this world to a halt, a celebration of her life will be held at Allendale Baptist Church in High Point at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to her memory to Hospice Home at High Point, 1803 Westchester Dr. High Point, N.C. 27262.
