Johanna Schwantes, died Sunday May 23, 1926, age 91 years, in Milwaukee, Wis. born April 8, 1835, in Chodziesen, PreuBen, Pommern, Germany. Johanna lived in Germany until 18 June, 1857 when she came to America. Johanna’s twin sister and two brothers Ferd and Wilhehm also came to the America. She married William Guetzke, in 1857, he was born in Falkenburg H. Pommern, Germany.He came to America 18 Nov, 1856.
They settled in the Milwaukee area and worked at the Trimborn Lime Kilns and Farm. This farm is now a Milwaukee County Park on 8881 W. Grange Ave. Greendale Wisconsin.
William and Johanna (Schwantes) Guetzke had five children. Their names are, August (Ulricka) Guetzke, Ferdinand (1. Katie Kelleher)(2. Amanda Blank) Guetzke, Robert (Emily Zibolsky) Guetzke, Lena (1. Philipp Hoffman) (2.Frank) Rode, Ida (1. Emil Zibolski) (2.Byron) Phippen.
They worked in the Milwaukee area for a few years, and then moved to a farm near Golden Lake, Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. After a few years they moved back to Milwaukee and purchased a General Store on 2221 Lisborn and Vliet Street. William and his son Ferdinand Guetzke operated this store for many years.
Johanna’s husband, William Guetzke was well known by many people near the store as a very dapper man, with a high hat and cane, as he would walk to and from his store.
Services Wednesday May 26th 1926, at the home of her daughter Lena Rode at 787 32nd Street. Interment in the Wanderers Rest Cemetery, Milwaukee, Wis.
