Cecilia ‘Sandy’ Ann Balkenhol was born December 11, 1943 in San Diego’s Mercy Hospital, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Frances (Herlevic) Coleman. She attended San Diego Parochial School and excelled in her education, receiving a scholarship to attend the University of San Diego, where Sandy completed her teaching credentials. She taught several years in a number of International Schools in Europe and became fluent in several languages. Sandy met and married her husband Klaus Balkenhol during her travels and lived in Kaiserswert, Germany for several years and the couple’s daughter was born there. The family moved to San Diego and lived in the upscale affluent neighborhood of Mission Hills. Their son was born while living in Mission Hills.
Sandy continued teaching and pursued two interest, one in Real Estate and another a Master’s Degree in Social Work at the time, until she was diagnosed with stage 4 Metastatic Lung Cancer in October 2008. She volunteered her time and services and was involved in her local parish; National Association for Mental Illness and Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance.
She was released from the hospital on November 7 her loving daughter cared for throughout her illness in her home in San Jose. Sandy joined her Lord in Eternal Life with her daughter at her side on December 27, 2008.
Mrs. Balkenhol is preceded in death by her father William ‘Shep’ Coleman and her beloved son Peter Balkenhol in 2005.
Remembrance of her life was held on February 6, at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Mission Hills.
