Lucille C. Widsteen,
85, Topeka, died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at a Topeka hospice house.

Mrs. Widsteen was an artist and florist and had owned and operated a gift shop in Colorado Springs, Colo., for several years. She also was a pianist for Wanamaker Baptist Church for more than 15 years.

She received a Presidential Medal of Honor in 1974 for saving the lives of passengers on a bus traveling on Interstate 70. The bus driver was stricken with a heart attack and she took over control of the bus. Her award and story are on display at the Kansas Museum of History.

She was born Feb. 6, 1917, in Burlingame, the daughter of Raymond and Ella Agnes Stewart Michael.

She graduated from Seaman High School and lived most of her life in Topeka. Mrs. Widsteen was a member of Artists Associate and an Optimist Club in Topeka.

She married Charles E. Widsteen in Topeka. He died in 1995.
Survivors include four daughters, Nancy Combest, Kansas City, Mo., "Tinka" Widsteen and Francey Oliva, both of Tampa, Fla., and Eileen Porubsky, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a son, James R. Corn, Redlands, Calif.; two sisters, Myrtle Andres, Topeka, and Betty Rose Hattan, Fort Baird, N.M.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at West Ridge Baptist Church in Topeka. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Widsteen will lie in state Thursday at Davidson Funeral Home, where visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice or the American Heart Association and sent in care of the funeral home.
