Patsy Ruth Nethery, "Pat", passed into her long-awaited eternal home on March 16, 2020 after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Her family, friends, and health care workers have witnessed her unwavering determination during the past several years as she squarely faced this and several other health issues. She was fierce and brave, yet full of grace, strength and beauty to the very end.

Pat was born in Vernon, Texas on October 18, 1931. She was the daughter of Archie and Myrtice Pickering. Her parents, four sisters and one brother preceded her in death. Pat grew up in various towns in both east and west Texas. Some of her fondest memories were of the time she spent on the family farm in Athens, Texas. She often spoke of her magical childhood there, surrounded by siblings, cousins, and grandparents. Pat clearly remembered the neighboring farmers passing by in wagons, driven by teams of horses. She often said of those times, "We didn't know we were poor." The farm remains in the family and Pat loved visiting there.

In the mid 1940's, Pat's parents moved to the small west Texas town of Odell. Pat attended Odell High School, where she was an "A" student, an excellent basketball player on the girl's competitive team, and graduated early at the age of 16. After graduation, she worked for the telephone company as an operator, which included taking calls equivalent to today's 911 calls.

In 1948, Pat met a handsome young soldier from nearby Vernon, Texas, and the two began dating. Pat married William Charles (Dub) Nethery, on October 21, 1949, three days after she turned 18. They moved to Amarillo, Texas, where they both worked as Dub attended barber school.

Pat and Dub's first daughter, Jan, was born in Texas, and a year and a half later they moved to California. Dub worked with Pat's dad doing carpentry work before getting a job with PG&E. The couple had five more children over the next several years. In 1961, they moved to Burney, California, where they settled for many years raising their big family and eventually welcoming many grandchildren. They were very active in the First Southern Baptist Church. Pat taught Sunday School and Bible School for years, and had an incredible love for the Lord.

Pat had many hobbies and enjoyed a variety of activities. Some of her best memories, were the many hours she spent grooming and riding her horses, cleaning the barn, loading, unloading and stacking hay bales – many times by herself while her kids were in school and her husband was at work! She loved spending time with the horses and took great pride in the caring for them. In 1985, Dub retired from PG&E and the couple moved to Redding, CA where they enjoyed gardening and visiting with their many children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In 2018, Pat moved to Lake Shastina, near Weed, CA to be near her beloved husband, who had been relocated to a long-term care center to attend to his health needs. She spent many hours there with him and never complained about her own health problems. In 2019, Dub passed away. Pat had been by his side every moment possible, as she had for 70 years.

Pat is survived by daughters Jan Nethery, Karen Alves and Kim Nethery of Weed, CA; Robbie Paul of Brookings, OR; and sons, Joel Nethery of Redding, CA and Randy Nethery of Iuka, IL. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Pat made every child, grandchild and great grandchild feel like they were her favorite.

Patsy Ruth Pickering was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend. She had a strong constitution and a belief in doing what was right. She will be deeply missed by the many people who loved her.

A memorial service will be held at Allen and Dahl in Redding on May 1st at 11am.
