James Bancroft born and baptized at Lynn, Massachusetts 2 January 1757, died in Boston 2 April 1803. He married, about 1783, Sarah (Sally) Parsons of Leicester, Massachusetts, born 22 February 1754, died in April 1795, daughter of Israel and Hannah (Waitt) Parsons. Of Leicester, Massachusetts. Both James Bancroft and his wife Sarah are buried in the Old Central Burying Ground on Boston Common. His epitaph states: "He served his country with honour during the Revolutionary War". Notice of his death, with a brief obituary, appears in the boston "Columbian Centinel", a semi-weekly publication, on Wednesday 6 April 1803: "In this town, on Saturday last, Capt. James Bancroft, AEt 47. A man of natural sound understanding--he served with reputation in the American army during the revolutionary war, and has now left several depending orphan children and aged parents to deplore his loss, and that support to which he contributed more from duty and principle than from his scanty pecuniary abilities." James Bancroft was commissioned ensign in Colonel Bridges' regiment on May 1775, and was present at the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Siege of Boston; was commissioned lieutenant in M. Jackson's (Eighth) regiment 12 May 1780, and served through the War. He then settled in Boston and was a grocer in Back Street (Boston Directory 1789), and for some years prior to his death was an inspector of customs in that city, being so listed in the Boston Directory in 1796 and 1798. He was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati, resigning in June 1793 ("Memorials of the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati" , Boston, 1931, page 94
