"EMRICH-On May 29, 1945, KATIE, beloved mother of Donald L. Emrich. Funeral from the Parlors of of F.B. Wippert & Sons, Baltimore and Monroe streets, on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment in Loudon Park Cemetery." The Evening Sun, Baltimore, Maryland • Wed, May 30, 1945, Page 23

Katherine E. Sauerwald was the daughter of Frederick and Margaret Elizabeth (Aumen) Sauerwald. She was born on October 8, 1871 in Baltimore, Maryland, based on where her parents were living and her birthdate in the 1900 US Census, and her age of 73 years, 7 months, and 21 days at the time of her death.

Her first marriage was to Charles Grebe. The 1900 US Census says that they had been married for nine years, placing the marriage about 1891. It also says that she had two children and two of them living, but only lists her son, Elmer Louis Grebe, who was born in 1892. A Baltimore City death certificate reveals that they had an infant, Edward Charles Grebe, who died at 2 months old in 1893. Charles was a butcher in Cross Street Market, and they lived at 417 Frederick avenue, where he died in 1902 after a lingering illness of diabetes.

Soon after that, Katie married Robert Hue Spedden, Jr. There is a notice of transfer of real estate on Frederick Avenue in "The Baltimore Sun" on November 23, 1905 from "Katie Spedden and husband to Henry Smith." Robert had been previously married, but his wife Mary had died in 1904. This would place their marriage in about 1905. Robert had at least two children by this previous marriage. Robert and Katie lived at 2544 Frederick Avenue with her son Elmer, where Robert died in 1909, leaving Katie a widow for a second time.

On November 21, 1910, a marriage license was issued for the widow Katie E. Spedden and Clarence A. Steffe. Clarence Andrew Steffe was a machinist for the railroad. In the 1920 US Census they were living on Frederick avenue with her son Elmer Grebe. The 1926 Baltimore City Directory lists Kath. E. Steffe as married to machinist Clarence A. Steffe, with both of them living at 2500 McHenry in Baltimore.

Family documents relate that Katie and Clarence divorced and that she married Lou Emerick, only to divorce him and remarry to Clarence Steffe. These family documents are unsourced. What is known is that in 1928 Clarence and Katie had seperated, and she is listed in the city directory as Katie E. Steffe, a baker working at 404 Belair Market, and residing at 2641 Frederick Road in Baltimore. In 1929, Louis Emrich, a printer, and his wife Kath are living at 2011 Wilkens Avenue in Baltimore. The 1930 US Census lists Kattie Emerich, divorced, as living with her son Elmer L. Greve [sic] on 2013 Wilkens Avenue in Baltimore.

According to the 1940 US Census, Katie Emerick, divorced, lived in Baltimore with her son Elmer Grebe and his wife Katherine, and also with her adopted son, Donald Emerick, age 8. Elmer's obituary lists a son Donald Grebe. There are also two lodgers living with them, in addition to Clarence A. Steffe, who is listed as her brother-in-law, not as her ex-husband of the same name.

Her son Elmer L. Grebe died in 1944, and his obituary refers to him as the "son of Katherine E. and the late Charles L. Grebe", indicating that Katie was still living at the time.

Katie Emrich died on May 29, 1945 in Baltimore and was buried on May 31st in Loudon Park, leaving a son, Donald L. Emrich.
