William Robert Thornley, 91 1/2, passed away at Maple Springs, North Logan, Utah on Tuesday, 10 March 2020, just shy of his 92nd birthday.

Robert was born in Smithfield, Utah on 27 March 1928, to W. Clark and Gladys W. Thornley.

In his youth, Robert participated in scouting and 4-H, and won a trip to the National 4-H Congress in Chicago for his gardening project.

Robert honorably served in the Southern States Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon his return, Robert attended USU and majored in Dairy Science.

He enlisted in the Army ROTC and served in the Korean War. Robert reenrolled at USU upon his return home. He earned his Master's degree in Bacteriology. While working as a teaching assistant in a lab class he met the former Annette Anderson, who would become his wife. The couple wed in the Logan Temple on 31 July 1957.

Annette and Robert were the parents of six children, Robbie, Joan, Peggy, Ken, Randal, and Kathryn. Annette passed away in November 1981 of cancer. Robert navigated single parenthood for a number of years, then was blessed to marry Velda Mae Egan on 26 September 1992.

Velda truly has been an anchor and a support to Robert and both of their families. For the past twenty-seven years, she has cared for, encouraged, nudged, taught, and loved him. And her children, Trina (John) Wollen, Darrell (Annette) Egan, Terri (Lynn) Maughan, Teresa (Stew) Nielsen, Tess (Paul) Hulet, Dan Egan,and Trudy (Brad) Carlson and families also loved and welcomed him into their families. He enjoyed many wonderful times with them and loved them as his own.

Robert and Velda enjoyed serving in the Ireland Dublin Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He also had loved teaching Primary, ministering families and working in the Logan Temple as an officiator.

Robert was a born inventor. Whether in employment or leisure, he was most happy when experimenting, inventing, trying out a new goal or working on a new project.

After retiring from USU, he founded the companies Heritage Glass and Thornley Processes LLC and created an Oral History Foundation named after his parents. He also was part of a Utah delegation to Russia to promote Utah businesses and trade . While there made lifelong friends.

Robert is a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and brother. His memory will be cherished by many descendants, to include a combined forty-seven grandchildren, seventy-two great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; along with his brother, W. Ray Thornley; many extended family members and friends across the globe.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Annette Thornley, his son, Robbie and his parents.

Robert's family appreciates the wonderful care he received from his hospice staff, especially his nurse, Holly Egbert, and the care of the Maple Springs staff.
