Rev. Amidon was born in Garrisonville on Sept. 25, 1917, and early in life moved to Triangle. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the 5th Marine Division for four years during World War II. After the war, he started his own plumbing, heating and air conditioning business in Triangle.
When he sold his business, he accepted a position with the Department of the Navy as a mechanical engineer.
His call to the ministry came fairly late in life, and at 37 years of age he returned to school to complete his education. Seminary work was completed at Duke Divinity School in North Carolina. He was ordained a minister in the United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach in 1963. Henry served 10 churches throughout the Virginia Conference.
Henry retired from active ministry in 1984. In 1987, he returned to full-time ministry as pastor of Tabernacle United Methodist Church, where he served for three years and then was named pastor emeritus, a title he held until his death.
Survivors include his wife of almost 65 years, Shirley Fines Amidon; a daughter, Sherry Peatross and her husband, Martin, of Fairfax; a sister, Josephine A. Dillon of Stafford; two grandchildren, John Reeke and his wife, Jennifer, of Burke, and Suzanne Fletcher and her husband, John, of Tampa, Fla.; and four great-grandchildren, Sally and Cassidy Reeke and Caleigh and Caden Fletcher; a nephew, Joseph DeSanto, who was a great help to Henry and Shirley in Henry's last years; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
