Velma was the daughter of Neva and Frederick Chandler, who died from tuberculosis within two years of moving to the Manassas Virginia area from Wisconsin.

The doctors in Wisconsin told her parents to move to Virginia because they thought the weather would be beneficial in curing her TB but unfortunately it made little difference and she died at the age of 16.

Her grave marker reads: "Darling, we miss thee."
