Mr Yowell was on of Orlando's most beloved, respected, and self made businessmen. The son of David Marshall Yowell and Susan Hersberger, the family moved to Orlando in 1884 because of the failing health of David Yowell, settling south of the city near Lake Jessamine. Mr Yowell died within a year of his arrival, throwing the responsibility of the family on the 14 year old boy. His siblings were Walter, Arthur, Henry, Hattie and Bessie.

In 1894 after 8 years of clerking in a dry goods store he and his sister Hattie started their own store which would eventully prosper.

In 1899 he was elected to the city council and re-elected in 1901.

In 1913 Mr Yowell formed a stock company joining forces with Eugene Duckworth and later with Benjamin Drew.

Mr Yowell was honored during his lifetime by many organizations and held office in dozens of civic and commercial clubs. He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church, served as president of the Rotary club, chamber of commerce, was a trustee of Rollins College and in 1936 was the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Medallion Award by that institution. He was active in the boy scouts, YMCA, Knights of Pythiasm Knight Templar and Odd Fellow, active in the Red Cross, governor of Orange Memorial Hospital and director of Orange County Building and Loan.

In 1897 Mr Yowell married Gertrude Southgate and the couple had five children, Richard, Elizabeth, Virginia, Lydia and Newon P. Jr.
