The Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers, Tom Mix and Hopalong Cassidy—these were Matt’s early heroes. They shaped him the way he would eventually shape others. Born in McAlester, Oklahoma in 1944 to Fletcher and Lauranel Davis and living in Wilburton on and off for most of his life. Matt was involved in many aspects of the community. As a young man, he was active in sports, 4H/FFA and community activities. Through these he gained a respect for coaches and educators. He followed in his father’s footsteps to become an educator. He taught at Hartshorne for 12 years and remained active in education as a school board member for 15 more years. While education was always important to him, Matt had a love of community that led to his work in Economic Development in S.E. Oklahoma for 16 years. As a life-long member of Wilburton First United Methodist Church, Matt continued to positively impact young people. He also helped as a 4H leader and was active in Friends of the NRA teaching gun education and safety. Family and horses were two of Matt’s great loves—not always in that order. He is survived by his wife of 47 years; his brothers and sisters; his kids and grandkids; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Latimer County Extensions, P.O. Box 266, Wilburton, Oklahoma 74578. A celebration of life event will be held at Noon on March 21, 2020 at the Davis Ranch. Cremation arrangements were under the direction of Jones Harkins Funeral Home.
