Sonia Hirsch Friedman passed away at the age of 92 in the early morning hours of Sunday, March 8, 2020, at Franklin Foundation Hospital.

Sonia was born in New Orleans on July 9, 1927 and was the eldest of two daughters born to the late Henry and Martha Hirsch. Her father was of Westlake, LA and her mother was of Schirrhoffen, France, having emigrated in the early 1900’s. Through a cousin, she was introduced to Meyer Friedman, an immigrant from Suwalki, Poland, who lived in Franklin, LA. They would marry in October of 1949 in New Orleans and settled down in Franklin where they lived their entire lives. She helped her husband run his family businesses in Franklin, A. Friedman Sons Department Store and Meyer’s Shoe Store. She lived a simple and private life, enjoying spending time with family and visiting with the many customers who frequented their store.

Survivors include her children, Henry Friedman and his wife Fillis and Leah F. Dworkin and her husband Michael; six grandchildren, Dr. Elliott Friedman and his wife Meagan, Nathaniel Dworkin and his wife Sarah, Meyer Friedman, PhD., Dr. Jonathan Friedman and his wife Laura, Michelle F. Muscat and her husband Adam, and Tracey F. Levy and her husband Joseph; nine great grandchildren, Brayden and Oliver Friedman, Benjamin and Caroline Dworkin, Hadleigh Friedman, Avery and Madison Muscat, and Noah and Micah Levy; and her dear friend, Sharon Caviness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Meyer Friedman; her parents, Henry Hirsch and Martha Solomon Hirsch; and her sister, Madeline Miriam Hirsch.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. at Congregation Gates of Prayer in New Iberia. Following she will be laid to rest in Gates of Prayer Cemetery. Rabbi Barry Weinstein will conduct the services. A gathering of family and friends will be held Monday, March 9, 2020, at Ibert’s Mortuary in Franklin from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons, Dr. Elliott Friedman, Nathaniel Dworkin, Meyer Friedman, PhD., Dr. Jonathan Friedman, and her grandsons-in-law, Adam Muscat and Joseph Levy.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to Jewish Children's Regional Service, P.O. Box 7368, Metairie, LA 70010-7368, (504) 828-6334, or to Congregation Gates of Prayer, C/O Leah Lahasky, 1620 Elm St., New Iberia, LA 70560.
