He served in Co. I, 46th Georgia Infantry Regiment, as a private. He was wounded in the Battle of Atlanta on July 22, 1864. Shrapnel from shells fractured his ribs on the right side. He applied for his Pension about 1900 or so, as an indigent.
He married Martha Hawkins on 7 December 1856, in Talbot County, Georgia.
He was born in Charleston, South Carolina. Lived in Marion County, South Carolina, and also Talbot County, Georgia, and Upson County, Georgia. At his death he was a widower and lived with his brother-in-law James Hawkins.
He and Martha had four children:

William Bethea b. 1860
Albert Ira Bethea b. 1868
Martha "Mattie" Bethea b. 1872.
He was the son of Phillip Pearce Bethea (1805-1863) and his first wife Frances Beckwith (b. 1805).
