Mary DeLoise Cooke Miller, age 98, passed away on March 4, 2020. She was born in Abilene, Texas on December 9, 1921 to Albert and Mary Cooke. She was the fourth of eight children. Her family lived in several small west Texas towns where her father farmed and worked in hardware sales. When her father was employed by Humble Oil Refining Company, they settled in Baytown, Texas. Music was an important part of her family’s life. She and her sisters played piano, and DeLoise played trumpet in the marching band at Robert E. Lee High School. After high school, DeLoise worked as a sales clerk and office manager for Woolworth while attending college at night. During World War II, jobs for women became available at Humble Oil. She was hired in the accounting department.

DeLoise married John Miller in 1949. After their marriage, her job was homemaker. His career in the FBI led to their traveling life. His assignments led them to Cleveland, Ohio; New York City; Arlington, Virginia; San Antonio and Brownsville, Texas; San Juan and Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico; Tampa and St. Petersburg, Florida; Monterrey, Mexico, and finally San Antonio.

She was a longtime member of Trinity Baptist Church and then Northeast Baptist Church. She enjoyed membership in a Bridge Club and the FBI Wives Association.

DeLoise was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt who will be dearly missed.

DeLoise was preceded in death by husband of 39 years, John Herdon Miller; brothers Albert Cooke and Charles Cooke; sisters Addie Belle Bailey, Allene Butler, and Dorothy Hayes. She is survived by her sisters, Flora Mae Nickerson, Ellen Flynt and husband, John; her children, Marilyn Miller, Scott Miller, Carol Entringer and husband, Jim; grandchildren, Byron Forrest and wife, Jenny, Rachel Forrest, Anita, Alexis, and Andrea Miller, David Entringer, James Entringer and wife, Grace, Kathryn Lara and husband, Ryan, and John Entringer.

Visitation will be on Friday, March 6, 2020 from 6-8 pm at Sunset Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 2:00 pm at the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Reception to follow at Marilyn Miller’s house at 202 Wyndale; San Antonio, TX 78209.
