2nd Earl of Clarendon. Born the son of Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon and Frances Aylesbury. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for Lyme Regis in June 1660. He married to Theodosia Capell, in January 1660. They had one son before her death. He married again in October 1670, to Flower Backhouse. He was styled as Viscount Cornbury sometime before 1674 and served as Member of Parliament for Wiltshire between 1661 and 1674. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Bath in April 1661. He served as Private Secretary to the Queen Consort in 1662 and held the office of High Steward of Reading in 1674. He succeeded to the titles of 2nd Viscount Cornbury, 2nd Earl of Clarendon and 2nd Baron Hyde of Hindon in December 1674. He was invested as a Privy Counselor in January 1679 and held the office of Treasurer to the Queen Consort between 1680 and 1684. He held the office of Lord Privy Seal from February 1685 to March 1687, and was Councilor to the Queen Consort in 1687. In 1688 he was one of the first to desert James II in favor of his daughter and son-in-law William and Mary, but his career faltered thereafter, and never recovered. He died at age 71, following an asthma attack. He was succeeded in his titles by his son Edward.
