Born Paul Rey Briggs, he joined the Marine Corps in 1920 under the alias of Paul Browne. It is believed that he abandoned his two daughters by his first wife Vera Alice Blair, who died in 1918, at this time. His daughters Harriet and Evelyn were cared for by their maternal grandparents.
