NORFOLK--Rufus Avery Deal, Jr., 59, of 2718 Keller Ave., the husband of Mrs. Hilda Miranda Deal and a native of Caldwell County, N.C., died Tuesday in a Portsmouth hospital.
He retired from the Navy after 24 years and service in World War II, taking part in the Normandy invasion. He received a Purple Heart in Normandy. He was a Civil Service employe, a Catholic, and a member of the Fleet Reserve Association.
Other survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Theresa D. Wachal of Guam, Mrs. Sandra D. Provo of Fredericksburg, Mrs. Virginia D. Belvin of Virginia Beach, and Mrs. Kittie D. Stump of Edgewater, Md.; a son, Robert Allen Deal of Norfolk; and 11 grandchildren.
A funeral will be held Saturday at noon in Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, by the Rev. Father Joseph F. Geary. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach.
The family will be at the funeral home tonight from 7 to 9. A prayer service will be held Friday night at 8 in the funeral home. Military honors will be accorded at the grave. The family will be at the Deal's home. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
