NELSON BAUGHER CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIES AT 100 YEARS
VALENTINE MAN RETAINED REMARKABLE VIGOR UNTIL NEAR END OF CENTURY
The LaGrange Post No. 215 of the American Legion conducted full military services Tuesday afternoon for LaGrange county's oldest citizen and last Civil War veteran, Nelson Baugher. Mr Baugher's death occurred last Sunday morning, March 29, just one month after he had celebrated his one hundredth birthday.
The funeral rites were held at 2:00 o'clock from his late farm home near Valentine, where he resided with the tenants, Mr and Mrs W. A. Gose. Rev. Wayne Mitchell of the Valentine Methodist church officated and burial was made in Greenwood cemetery. The body remained at the Carney funeral home until time for the services.
Mr Baugher suffered an illness with influenza this winter, following which he gradually weakened until his death. Until the past few months he had shown remarkable vitality, mentally and physically, and had been able to carry on his own business affairs, and to visit LaGrange on frequent occasions. He was a well known figure here, marching in the Memorial day parades until recent years.
Mr Baugher joined Company B, 35th Indiana Infantry, on September 28, 1864, and served until the close of the Civil War. He was engaged in the battles at Franklin and Nashville under Generals Thomas and Stanley.
He cast his first vote in 1864, when Lincoln was reelected president, and had never missed his election vote in the intervening 78 years.
Mr Baugher was born in Chester township, Wabash county, on February 29, 1842, and came to LaGreange county 12 years later. The Valentine vicinity had always been his home, and he had acquired a number of properties in that vicinity.
Mr Baugher never married. He attended the Valentine church in his younger years but was not given much to organization matters. He was an intelligent reader and conversationalist and was an adherent of the Republican party. He showed excellent business judgement and handled his own business affairs until his final illness.
The only surviving relatives known are a first cousin, Mrs Cora Baugher Rockwell of North Manchester, and her two daughters, Miss Gladys Rockwell and Mrs Chester Ulrey, also of that city. Mrs Rockwell's father Archibald Baugher , was a brother of Nelson Baugher's father, Jesse Baugher, Wabash county was the Baugher home county. Nelson was one of a large family but no brothers or sisters are remembered by LaGrannge county people. Mrs Rockwell, mentioned above, attended Mr Baugher during an illness several years ago, but was unable to attend the funeral. Her daughters were present.
