At the age of 22 yrs with a younger brother came into the Town of Sheldon first settling one and one-half miles south of Humphrey Hollow until 1856 when he purchased his farm west of Johnsonburg. In 1843 he united with the Humphrey Hollow Congregational Church and soon was chosen Deacon. When the church ceased to exist in 1860 he was a founding member of the Johnsonburg Presbyterian Church where he served both as Deacon and Ruling Elder.
