Homer was the nineth of six surviving children born to Isaac and Molly. Three siblings died in infancy prior to Homer's birth. Homer graduated from Mt Moriah High School in 1928. He worked various job in various locations including the steel mills in Gary, Indiana, prior to marrying Jean. They settled first on his dad's farm west of Mt. Moriah, then bought their own farm. They raised four children and provided a good home by milking cows, planting crops and be active members of the Mt Moriah Methodist Church. The children were taught to love the LORD and thank Him for all their blessings.
