Obituary of Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Hamilton
Mary Elizabeth Hamilton entered into eternal rest on Saturday, March 9, 2013 at her residence in Lakeway, Texas.
She was born Mary Elizabeth Barnes in Dickinson, Texas on February 9, 1922 to Carlisle Stoner Barnes and William Wythe Barnes and lived in Texas her whole life. She joins her husband, Martin Edward Hamilton, in eternal rest. She is survived by their children and their spouses including Martin Edward Hamilton III and wife Vaness, Carolyn Hamilton Cole and husband Jerry, William Barnes Hamilton and wife Glenna. Other immediate family includes their 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Those who knew Betty will remember her as an incredibly influential woman characterized by her creativity, imagination and individualism. She was a talented artist who as a child loved to paint by the bayou and as an adult lived her life pursuing many creative endeavors. She delighted in life's curiosities and touched many with her creative passion, artistic talent and compelling sense of style.

Her passion for art was only third to her first two loves -- God and her family. Betty married her husband of 64 years, Martin Edward Hamilton, on Easter Sunday in 1943. Martin proposed to Betty within a week after meeting her in Galveston, Tx where he was captivated by her charismatic charm as so many who knew her were. She, with her husband, raised their 3 children in faith and love and was tremendously influential in the lives of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Betty was also a matriarchal figure for her extended family as the last surviving member of her generation.

Betty had many cherished friends but the closest were that of her two sisters Dorothy and Annabel whom she loved deeply, enjoyed dearly to be near and passed many hours sharing old memories.

Betty graduated from Dickinson High School and lived in Dickinson, in the home her grandfather built, until she relocated to College Station and then Houston, Texas early in her marriage. While living in Houston she was a founding and devout member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church where she participated in the Saintly Stitchers church organization. She and her husband retired to Galveston Texas, the city they most identified with as home. They were very involved in the Galveston community and Trinity Episcopal Church. In 2004 she and her husband moved to Lakeway, Texas to be near their children and transferred their church affiliation to St. Luke's on the Lake Episcopal Church.

Betty with her husband Martin will also be remembered by their incredible generosity and philanthropic endeavors. They established the Martin and Betty Hamilton Endowment in Cardiology at UTMB Galveston, the Dr. Herbert M. Seybold Scholarship Fund at UTMB Galveston honoring their dear friend Dr. Herbert Seybold, The President's Scholarship Fund at Texas A&M College Station, Shreiner Institute Educational Scholarship fund at Kerrville and numerous other philanthropic activities in the field of education. They were faithful supporters of the Cultural Arts in Galveston, the Galveston Historical Foundation, Our Daily Bread and Trinity Episcopal Church.

Betty Hamilton was devoted to caring for her family. When her husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, Betty chose patience and faith. In her final years, her children responded by giving back to her generous amounts of love and care she had given to their father and always shared with each of them.

Family and friends are welcome to a service at St. Luke's on the Lake Episcopal Church at 1:00pm on Saturday, March 23, 2013. Arrangements for interment at Trinity Episcopal Church in Galveston are scheduled for March 25th at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent to Alzheimer's Association or the charity of one's choice.

The family would like to thank caregiver Carol Anne Chancellor, Althea Duerineckx and Cerell Diamanpini for their dedicated service.

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy, 4:7.
