Mrs. Emily Prestridge
Gone to Rest
Tuesday night Mrs. Emily Prestridge, wife of our esteemed citizen, J . M. Prestridge, died of paralysis. She was taken suddenly early Monday morning and after two days suffering, she expired. She was born in Stewart County, Georgia, September 5, 1816, and died February 16, 1887, in the 71st year of age. Truly a good woman to rest. All who knew her loved her for the rare qualities of head and heart which she possessed.
To the bereaved family, the Bulletin joins with their numerous friends in tendering its sincere sympathy, and trust that the God who ruleth over all, will, be generous in pouring the oil of consolation upon their troubled hearts
Sister Emily Prestridge
Sister Emily Prestridge died at her home in Alvarado, Texas on February 17, 1887, aged 70 years, 6 months and 10 days. Sister Emily Prestridge was born in Stewart County, Georgia, and in 1824 moved with her parents, John and Bessie Ezell to Perry County, Alabama. When sixteen years old she professed faith in Christ, and was baptized into the fellowship of the Hopewell Baptist Church. She was married to J. M. Prestridge in September 1833, moved to Texas in 1867, and soon after united with the Church at Alvarado, of which she continued a consistent member until her death.
She leaves to mourn her departure, her husband and three children, five of her children having preceded her.
Her Christian life was beautifully consistent. The writer has known her ever since her remodel to Texas, and can truly say that he never knew a more devoted Christian. She did not practice a Sunday Christianity only. Her devotion was seen in her every day conversation and deportment.
She always seemed anxious to know and do the right herself, and seemed solitious for the well-being and salvation of others. For years she was afflicted and her health was quite feeble, her seat at Church was seldom vacent.
Often have I seen her at church when she had to be assisted to walk into the building. She was always faithful in visiting and caring for the sick, and ever had a word of comfort for the sorrowful and encouragement for the dispondent. Few persons had a host of warm comforting friends . But her life's task is finished. The Lord has bidden her come home and rest. Our loss is her gain.
Bereaved husband and children weep not but look upward. Ere many years may pass away a happy meeting in the Paradise of God will more than make amends for all our troubles and losses here.
