Ruth Knapp was born on February 15, 1795 in Fairfield, Franklin County, Vermont. Her parents were Eleazer Knapp and Statira Hull (after the death of Eleazer, she became Mrs. Isaac Butler) . Ruth married David Shurtleff Sr. (son of Ichabod Shurtleff and Betty Pettengill) in 1816 in Fairfield. They had nine children named Orrillia, Jerusha, Mary, David Jr., Albert, Laura, Alfred, Giles Waldo, and Ephraim Blake. David Sr. was a farmer and fought in the war of 1812 (The goverment gave him 160 acres in Bremer County, Iowa in recognition of his services). The Shurtleffs first lived in Stanstead, Quebec, Canada (Originally part of Vermont). Eventually they settled in Genoa, Dekalb County, Illinois. Ruth died on July 17, 1865 in Sycamore, DeKalb County, Illinois.
