Norma E. Saunders, 86, passed away on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at her home. Norma was born in West Virginia. Her parents were Wiley V. and Bessie W. Early. Norma was a retired Administrative Assistant with Portsmouth Public Schools where she worked for five Superintendents over 28 years. Norma was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Norma's joy came from doing for others and being with family and friends.
Norma was a member of Churchland Baptist Church and a member of the Rachel Bible Study Class. She was a former member of the Portsmouth Pilot Club as well as the Portsmouth Music Club. Norma was a member of the Portsmouth Retired Employees Organization.
Norma is predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Frank Saunders as well as her mother and father. She is also predeceased by her 7 siblings; Elise Gorman, Wiley V. Early, Jr., Rebecca Brower, Milton Early, James Early and Betty Joyce Gross. Norma was recently predeceased by her son-in- law Bill Nelson.
Norma is survived by her four children Bruce Saunders and wife Beverly, Barry Saunders and wife Pam, Lisa Nelson, Lori Mounie and husband Tim. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren Casey Saunders, Brett Saunders, Cory Nelson and wife Haley, Brady Saunders, Aaron Saunders, Hope Mounie, Jaclyn Mounie, Meredith Hamner and husband Rob, Samantha Bush and husband Jon, Tyler Luttrell; 3 great grandchildren Turner Nelson, Parker Nelson and Boyd Bush; as well as two siblings Dorothy Benson and Michael Wayne Early. Norma also leaves behind her dear caregiver and friend Evy Thompson.
A funeral will be held on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at 11:00 am. at Churchland Baptist Church by Dr. Dan Koger with interment to follow at the Churchland Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-7 pm on Monday, January 21, 2019 at Loving Funeral Home at 3225 Academy Avenue, Portsmouth, VA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Churchland Baptist Church Building Fund.
