Terrible Accident at the Central Railroad Yard- A Little Boy Killed- A Child Fearfully Hurt at the G.R. & L. Turntable
About 11 o'clock this morning a little boy, son of Mr. McClernan, who lives on Ransom street, made an effort to jump upon the foot board of the switch engine when he fell and was horribly crushed and cut to pieces. The engine was on the Cahill sidetrack with six cars, when it is supposed the little fellow tried to get on, fell and was run over. Two little girls who were nearby say this in substance. An outcry was heard, but whether from the child or the little girls the engineer could not say. He saw someone up Rose street motion just a second before the accident but did not know what for; he stopped the engine and what he saw he found it difficult to recognize, it was so mangled. The news spread, and in a little while there came many people—the parents of the unfortunate child as well. After a time, the remains were gathered and taken by Mr. Goodale to be placed in a coffin as well as they might be. A coroner's jury was summoned. The coroner's jury, consisting of Menzo W. Conklin, John Souses, P. H. Burke, Cornelius Hollestelle, Ezra Carpenter, C. H. Bird, appeared at Justice Wattles's at one o'clock. The case was then adjourned till Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock. The accident happened on the north track, just west of the Church street crossing. Soon after this a little child was badly hurt at the turn table of the G. R.
