Waldeen D. Ficke, 81, of Canyon died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, in Amarillo.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church of Canyon with the Rev. Robert Bennett, pastor of Freedom Baptist Church of Amarillo, and David Lowrie, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery of Amarillo by Brooks Funeral Directors.

Mrs. Ficke was born April 5, 1921, in Ochiltree County, to Elbert C. and Rhoda Bess Dodson, who preceded her in death. She graduated from Perryton High School in 1938. She graduated as an RN from Northwest Texas Hospital in May 1942. She started the vocational nursing program at Amarillo College.

She moved to Austin in November 1972 as executive director of Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners. She retired and moved to Canyon in December 1983. She married Hubert Bishop on Aug. 22, 1942, in Amarillo. They had two children, Karen Barnes and Richard Bishop. She married Howard J. Wilson on June 8, 1968, in Amarillo. She later married George H. Ficke on May 28, 1987.

She was named Woman of the Year of Charter Chapter of ABWA in 1966. She was a volunteer at Palo Duro Hospital from 1984 until the hospital closed. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Canyon and the quilt ministry at the church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband on July 7, 1966; and her second husband on Aug. 22, 1981.

Survivors include her husband, George; two children, Karen Barnes and husband, Orin, of Canyon and Richard Bishop and wife, Stephanie, of Maize, Kan.; five grandchildren, Gay Burk and husband, Robert, of Frisco, Kam Barnes and wife, Holly, of Manchaca, Darin Barnes and wife, Brooke, of Canyon, Kevin Bishop of Kansas City, Mo., and Kimberly Rogers and husband, Kevin, of Wichita, Kan.; six great-grandchildren, Brad Burk and Ryan Burk, both of Frisco, Logan Barnes and Ellie Barnes, both of Manchaca, and Lorin Barnes and Rilee Barnes, both of Canyon; four stepchildren, Nancy LaFavers, Barbara Higdon and Margaret Ann Fox, all of Amarillo, and Lynn Mann and husband, Jim, of Georgetown; nine stepgrandchildren, Robin Hunt and husband, Wayne, of The Colony, Sherree Bennett and husband, Robert, Kristina Johnston and husband, Presley, Joanna Higdon, Cinda Odneal and husband, Robert, and Austin Dowell and wife, Stacy, all of Amarillo, Ronny Higdon of Omaha, Neb., Paige Tebeest and husband, Donnie, of Plainview, and Krisha Glenn and husband, Kyle, of Denver; seven step great-grandchildren, Joshua Bennett, Jacob Bennett, Blake Johnston, Mackenzie Johnston and Bailee Higdon, all of Amarillo, Mitchell Tebeest of Plainview and Audrey Glenn of Denver; a sister, Beryl Trew of Perryton; a brother, Jack Dodson and wife, Betty, of Tulia; and an aunt, Emily Suggs of Hereford.

The family suggests memorials be to First Baptist Church United We Build Fund, 1717 Fourth Ave., Canyon, TX 79015.
