Jerome M. Beary, 60, of Newton died Saturday, July 30, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

A memorial mass will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton with the Rev. Ernest Braida officiating. A private family burial will be held at a later date at St. Mary's Weller Cemetery in Weller. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

The family will greet friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with a coffee time from 7:30 to 8 p.m. A vigil service will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to St. Mary's Weller Cemetery Association or to Sacred Heart Catholic Church Building Renovation Fund. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or at the church on the morning of the service.

The son of Walter E. and Mary G. (Hackathorn) Beary, he was born May 18, 1945, in Lovilia. He graduated from Albia High School in 1963.

On April 24, 1965, he married Betty L. Ellis in Weller.

He owned and operated car washes for 40 years. He owned Beary Car Wash in Knoxville and Newton, and in Des Moines, he owned the Touchless of Hickman and Touchless of Merle Hay.

Mr. Beary was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton and a member of the International Car Wash Association. He enjoyed running equipment of all sizes. He also enjoyed being outdoors, doing gardening and hunting. He also was a builder. He built several different types of lifts to help people in wheelchairs, and built and created other items.

Survivors include his wife; two brothers, Larry (Joan) Beary of Lovilia and Walter (Georgina) Beary of Cedar Rapids; three sisters, Joyce (Alex) Koffman of Campbellsport, Wis., Loretta (Ernie) Corso of Albia and Helen (Pete) Williams of Davenport; and a brother-in-law, Bob (Beverly) Claman of Carlisle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Kelley Anne in infancy; and a sister, Pauline Claman.
