Kerry Addition Woman Held On Open Murder Charge In Fatal Stabbing Of Her Husband Saturday Evening [10 Dec 1949]
Mrs. Annie Pluebell pleads ‘Not Guilty’ At Hearing This Morning
By Joe McLaughlin, Progress Staff Writer
Mrs. Annie M. Pluebell, 49, of Clearfield R.D. 2 was ordered held without bail for court this morning on an open charge of murder in the fatal stabbing of her husband in their home in the lower section of Kerr Addition Saturday afternoon.
Earle Pluebell, 54, her husband, died in the Clearfield Memorial Hospital at 7:25 p.m. Saturday night of a stab wound in the chest, allegedly administered by his wife with a kitchen style butcher knife following a domestic quarrel.
County Coroner Dr. Richard L. Williams attributed death to pulmonary hemorrhage resulting from a stab wound.
Mrs. Pluebell was arrested by Pfc. Robert Rice and Pvt. Robert Houth of the local State Police barracks following the death of her husband.
In a signed statement issued at the county jail by Mrs. Pluebell to Pfc, Rice she admitted that she “drove the knife in his chest.”
However, at the arraignment this morning before Justice of the Peace R.P. Neal, she entered the plea of not guilty.
At the hearing, it was brought out that a domestic quarrel arose at the Pluebell home Saturday afternoon. During the course of the argument, according to Mrs. Pluebell’s statement, an adopted four-year-old son ran into the kitchen and spilled hot coffee on himself.
When the child started to cry the statement continued, Mr. Pluebell went into the kitchen and started to whip him for crying.
Mrs. Pluebell said she went to the kitchen to stop Mr. Pluebell from whipping the child and he told her to shut up. When she persisted in stopping him, he turned on her and began to beat her up, she said.
The statement continued: “He picked up a butcher knife and said he would pin me to the wall. He then dropped the knife and I picked it up. He lunged (Please Turn to Page 8)
KERR ADDITION-Continued from page 1-at me and I drove the knife in his chest.”
At this morning’s arraignment Mrs. Pluebell was advised of her right of counsel and that she could waive a hearing and let the case go to court. She agreed to do that.
When confronted with the sworn statement and the information was read against her, the short, stocky woman broke into sobs, saying “I didn’t do it, I didn’t mean to do it.”
Throughout the entire hearing she appeared confused and several times she broke into tears.
The knife used in the attack was approximately six inches long and entered the right side of the chest. The blade cut partially through one rib and entered though two sections of the lung. Dr. Williams conducted a post mortem to determine the death cause.
Dr. Williams said that a coroner’s inquest would be held in the near future, probably at the end of the week.
State Police today are working with County Detective Fred Mills in fathering further evidence on the charge.
Mr. Pluebell was a veteran of World War I and prior to this death had been employed at the Robinson Clay Products Company here.
He is survived by his wife, Annie, his mother, Mrs. Ella Pluebell of Karthaus, and the following brothers; Ivan of Karthaus and William of Snow Shoe. One adopted son, Ronny, also survives.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Leavy Funeral Home. Rev. Jack Bain will conduct the services with interment to follow in the Crown Crest Memorial Park.
Members of the local American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will conduct memorial services at the grave.
