His body was found on Dec 2, 1938, 8 miles below Alexandria, in a a thicket near the bank of the Red River. According to the The Town Talk (Alexandria newspaper), cause of death was determined to be death from a .38 caliber bullet to the head. See The Town Talk from Tuesday, December 6, 1938, page 1, last column. It was ruled a murder by the coroner's jury.
