He is a member of the E. Union Church, where he always worshipped until his health would not permit him to attend. He is a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, in Tipton and a member of the Red Men at Elkin. He is a highly respected citizen and is one of a well known family in that part of the country.
He was born in Rush County, April 3, 1847 and is now 67 years of age. His father was Parker Scott, a native of Pennsylvania and his mother was Mary, a daughter of J.P. Saul, a native of Virginia. His parents came to Hamilton County in an early day, his father dying in 1862 and his mother in 1864. The remains of his parents were buried in the McCarty grave yard, In Hamilton County. In his father's family there were twenty children, he having been married three times. None of the children of the two first marriages are living, while only four of the last marriage are living, of which Hugh is one. Those living are Mrs. John Whetstone, of Atlanta; Mrs. Frank Bailey, of Sheridan; and Mrs. Lewis Fox of Elkin.
Hugh was a volunteer in the Union Army during the civil war and was in Co B, 75th Regiment. H.H. Montgomery was captain, afterward Captain Ellis, of Sharpsville. He enlisted in 1863, when but sixteen years of age and he served until the close of the war. He escaped without injury and he is now drawing a pension of $17.00 a month.
In 1860 he was united in marriage to Miss Amanda Ogle, daughter of Robert Ogle, in Hamilton County. Four children were born to them, one dying in infancy. Those living are Edward Scott of Kokomo; Charles Scott of Rigdon, and John Scott of Atlanta.
Until within the last few months he enjoyed reasonable good health and it is hoped by all his friends that he wil overcome his present ailments and will be able to be out among his friends and acquaintances."
