He was born Aug. 4, 1938, in Danville, a son of the late Harold and Sula (Seebold) Catherman.
Carl was a 1955 graduate of Mifflinburg High School and from Susquehanna University in 1959.
He started teaching at Salem High School in 1959 and retired in 1994. He also taught at several colleges.
Carl enjoyed stamp collecting, hunting, fishing and playing and singing bluegrass.
He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Karl and Diane (Henry); two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Patricia and her family.
He was preceded by his wife, Lillian (Emmons).
